New Delhi –
Senior Member of Parliament Brijmohan Agrawal today raised a pressing concern in the Lok Sabha regarding the hazardous aftermath of mining operations in Chhattisgarh, the largest coal-producing state in the country.
Agrawal highlighted that after mining work is completed, coal, iron ore, cement, and other mineral mines are often abandoned without proper rehabilitation. This careless abandonment, he said, is leading to severe environmental degradation, land subsidence, water pollution, and even posing serious threats to the health and safety of local communities and livestock.
He also criticized the arbitrary and irresponsible behavior of mining companies, urging that such negligence cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. “We are witnessing an environmental imbalance and growing health crisis in many affected areas,” he said.
Expressing hope, Agrawal stated, “I have full faith that the Honourable Coal and Mines Minister will take cognizance of this serious issue and will soon take concrete and effective steps.”
He concluded by affirming his commitment: “We are determined to protect the environment and life of Chhattisgarh!”
The statement has brought renewed attention to the long-standing issue of post-mining land reclamation and corporate accountability in India’s mineral-rich regions.
