Actor Mithun Chakraborty, widely regarded as one of the most versatile figures in Indian cinema, will be honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2022. The announcement was made on Monday by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The minister expressed immense joy in recognizing Mithun Chakraborty’s monumental contributions to Indian cinema. Renowned for his dynamic performances and iconic screen presence, Mithun Da, as he is affectionately called, has been a beloved figure in the film industry for decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Mithun Chakraborty on receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema. Praising the legendary actor, PM Modi described him as a cultural icon, admired by generations for his diverse and versatile performances.

Mithun Chakraborty’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a celebrated film star has been one of determination and resilience. Born Gourang Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata, West Bengal, he earned national recognition with his very first film, Mrigayaa (1976), for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Mithun went on to establish a lasting legacy in Indian cinema.

He rose to prominence with his role in Disco Dancer* (1982), a film that became a major success in India and abroad, and cemented his status as a dance icon. His dynamic performance and unique dance style in the film brought disco music into the mainstream of Indian cinema, and his popularity soared.

In addition to Disco Dancer, his notable work includes a powerful supporting role in Agneepath (1990), for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Mithun Chakraborty has also garnered two more National Film Awards for his roles in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998), showcasing his versatility across a range of genres.

Mithun Chakraborty’s contributions are not limited to the silver screen. Over the course of a nearly five-decade-long career, he has acted in over 350 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, and Telugu. His diverse filmography reflects his ability to portray a wide spectrum of characters, from action heroes to emotional, complex roles.

Mithun Chakraborty has also demonstrated his commitment to public service and social welfare through his tenure as a Member of Parliament.

Mithun Chakraborty has been recognized with numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career, including the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors. His influence on Indian cinema is profound, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of actors, filmmakers, and audiences.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award will be presented during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, scheduled for October 8, 2024. The selection committee for the award included esteemed personalities such as Asha Parekh, Khushbu Sundar, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah.

OPERATIONALISATION OF THE BHARATIYA ANTRIKSH STATION

Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) will fulfil the objectives of an orbiting Indian human spaceflight platform in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This will enable to undertake medium to long duration human spaceflight missions to LEO, as part of the sustained Indian human space program. Similar to other operational space stations, BAS will also comprise of multiple modules and state of the art technological capabilities for carrying out cutting edge scientific research and technology development activities in microgravity environment, targeted towards national priorities and societal applications.

With the recent approval of revision in Gaganyaan Programme, the scope of the program has been expanded to include precursor missions to Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), including development & launch of 1st module of BAS (BAS-01). The 1st module of BAS is targeted to be launched in 2028 timeframe and BAS is expected to be fully operationalised with all modules by 2035 timeframe.

Aims of Anusandhan National Research Foundation

The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) aims to receive funds amounting to Rs. 50,000 crore during 2023-28 in the form of ANRF Fund, Innovation Fund, Science and Engineering Research Fund, Special Purpose Funds. A budgetary provision of Rs. 14,000 crore is made from the Central Government and remaining amount will be sourced through donations from any other source, including from public sector enterprises, the private sector, philanthropist organizations, foundations or international bodies.

The first meeting of the GB was held on 10th September 2024 under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister as the President of the GB. The GB discussed strategic interventions of ANRF which are required to accelerate and strengthen the S&T landscape of the country. The deliberations included global positioning of India in key sectors, aligning R&D with national priorities, promoting inclusive growth, capacity building, driving scientific advances and innovation ecosystem, stimulating the latent potential of universities and colleges, bridging the gap between academic research and industrial applications through industry-aligned translational research and implementing programs to boost the country’s research ecosystem and accelerate scientific and technological advancements. R&D programs which were aligned with the discussions, namely, Prime Minister Early Career Research Grant (PMECRG), the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas -Electric Vehicle (MAHA- EV), Inclusivity Research Grant (IRG), Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research (PAIR) have been launched.

Clarification on Misleading Reports About Free Travel During Maha Kumbh Mela

It has come to the attention of Indian Railways that certain media outlets are circulating reports claiming that passengers will be allowed to travel free of cost during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Indian Railways categorically denies these reports, as they are entirely baseless and misleading

Traveling without a valid ticket is strictly prohibited under the rules and regulations of Indian Railways and constitutes a punishable offense. There are no provisions for free travel during Maha Kumbh Mela or any other occasion. 

Indian Railways is committed to ensuring seamless travel for passengers during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Adequate arrangements are being made, including the establishment of special holding areasadditional ticket counters, and other necessary facilities to manage the anticipated influx of passengers.
